The Very Hungry Caterpillar
and Butterflies

LITERACY

We have caterpillars growing in our science center.

The caterpillars are making cocoons. The one in front is just making his - the others are complete.

The day before Easter break all 5 of our caterpillars/cocoons opened and we had lovely Painted Lady butterflies.
Luckily I was able to video one hatching - quite remarkable. Click here to view.

.
Prop used for retelling. The caterpillar is attached to a stick. On the other side is the butterfly. The food has holes in the center which slip over the caterpillar. After the caterpillar eats the leaf flip the stick over to show the butterfly.

Flip book matching days of the week with the appropriate food.

Working on a number (0 - 17) puzzle.

The two girls who worked cooperatively to complete the puzzle. Well done!

Retelling Very Hungry Caterpillar using a sock that is colored to look like a caterpillar on one side. Children place food on sock (caterpillar) in chronological order (food has hook side Velcro on back so it sticks to sock). When all food placed on sock it is turned inside out to reveal a butterfly!

Pocket chart for sequencing the story by days of the week or the food. The 4 larger on the left are sequencing the life cycle of a butterfly.

We made caterpillars. We counted the number of pompoms for our age and then glued them on clothespins.

A couple of days after making our pompom caterpillars we made cocoons by covering a toilet paper roll with white yarn. We then placed our caterpillars inside the cocoons.

A few days after making the cocoon we used a coffee filter and covered it with bingo dauber dots, then sprayed the coffee filter with water to have the colors blend. After school I put the coffee filters into the clothespin and placed the caterpillars (now butterflies) back into the cocoons. The next day I ask the kids to check on their caterpillars - they were thrilled to find them changed!!

We made butterflies by folding a piece of paper and placing globs of paint in the middle of the fold; then refolding the paper and pressing to force the paint to spread. They all turned out very nice and the kids just love the activity!

We made butterfly cuff wings and then went flying outdoors through the school. Click here to get directions to making the butterfly cuff wings.

Patterning work that goes perfectly with the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I don't remember where I got these patterns but I printed them on envelops and put the pieces inside the envelope. The child completes the pattern on the top and then makes one of own on bottom.
