HOUSE FUN

In my preschool classroom we have a really fun activity that the children
love. I give each children a picture of a house. They then
decorate it to look like their house at home. On the bottom of
the house in big bold print I write that child's addreess. On
the top of the house I write the child's first and last name. When
they are done decorating the house I cut the roof of of the house. During
circle time if that child can say and reconize their address they then
get to put the roof on their house. I always help them if they
get stuck. Everyone gets the roof on their house by the end of circlr
time for trying. Children love this activity and it makes them
want to try and learn their address. I also do the same thing
with learning their telephone number. I use a telephone and cut
of the reciver. They they get the reciever on their phone when
they can recognize and say their telephone number.
HOMES

I had precut shapes of houses from large, white construction
paper. I gave the children watercolors and paints to decorate
their house. Then, after they were dry, I put their house number
onto the front of the house in bold,
black numbers. I then hung these house from one of our bulletin boards that
was low to the ground. I had laminated the houses and made a slit
by the door of the house. I made matching "little house" cards
with the corresponding house
number on them. During our circle time the children chose a card (it
didn'thave to be their own house) and then they matched up the number on the
little card with the number on the house. They put the card into the
slot and matched the number. It was alot of fun and they were learning
numbers and matching.
Class Directories

With the parents' permission, you can type up your own classroom
phone book and put it in your writing center. Place the names
in alphabetical order, and include a photo of each child next to
their address. Add envelopes and writing paper to encourage
writing. Be sure to encourage them to put their return address
in the top left corner! This is really the part that gets them
to learn their own address well. Also, suggest they write a
letter home to reinforce memorization. You also can have them
put their letters in their classmates cubbies--this is a good sorting/identification
exercise as well!
ADDRESSES

We have been learning our addresses with our preschool group, no
better way to learn them but by making their house also!! We
used brown lunch bags to create their own house that we have added
their address to! Open a brown lunch bag and stuff with newspaper,
When stuffed, children add pre made doors, windows, doorknobs, etc. Staple
shut and add the roof and then add the address to the roof, we made
our own little neighborhood for our classroom. At circle time,
the children chose their house and bring it to circle! Each
child then tells me his or address, with help if needed.
LEARNING ADDRESSES

To learn addresses, we play Pizza Delivery. I got a pizza box
from a local pizza store and drew a big pizza and laminated it. I
cut it in 20 pieces.
I choose a child to come to the phone(housekeeeping center phone) and order
a pizza. Another child takes the order and asks for the child's address. Well,
you can't get pizza delivered if they don't know where to bring it!! On
the back of each laminated slice is each child's name and address. If
they can't memorize it, they can read it off the back. When everyone
can order a pizza without peeking, we order real pizza and have it delivered
to our classroom.
Follow up: Give each child a triangular section of a paper plate. They
will need
brown circles for pepperoni, white yarn for cheese, red torn paper for
sauce,
green strips for peppers, etc. Let each child make their own paper plate pizza. |
